Motorbike rental and taxis in Da Lat: licence rules, mountain passes, and whether Grab and Xanh SM work

Licence for a motorbike in Da Lat: an IDP under the 1968 Vienna Convention plus a home licence with the motorcycle class. Mountain roads, passport as deposit, Grab, Xanh SM and Mai Linh.

To rent and ride a motorbike in Da Lat legally you need two documents: your home licence with the motorcycle class and an international driving permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention. A permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention does not count. Mountain roads are wet and foggy, and the Prenn pass was declared a landslide emergency zone in 2026, so a beginner is better off riding in town in daylight.

A Mai Linh taxi fleet is listed for Da Lat in the MIA directory; we could not confirm Grab or Xanh SM from a source, so check in the app. Da Lat is a city in Lâm Đồng province (since 1 July 2025 the province also includes Đắk Nông and Bình Thuận, Resolution 202/2025/QH15). Rental shops are in Da Lat transport rental, taxis in taxis and apps.

What licence do you need for a motorbike in Da Lat?

You need your home licence with the motorcycle class and an international driving permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention. According to the Vietnam Tourism guide (16 Sep 2026), the permit is valid only together with the home licence and must show class A or A1 for a motorcycle; a car class does not cover a bike. The same guide says a 1949 Geneva Convention permit is not recognised. Báo Đại biểu Nhân dân (17 Feb 2024) says the same about the Vienna Convention: with such a permit you need not convert it into a Vietnamese licence. The road rules are now set by the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety No. 36/2024/QH15 and Decree 168/2024/NĐ-CP on penalties (in force since 1 January 2025); we did not check their articles on foreigners against the primary text, so confirm the rule with the traffic police before a long stay.

What if I live in Vietnam for more than three months?

Long-term residents follow different rules. According to the same Báo Đại biểu Nhân dân piece (as of February 2024), a foreigner living, working or studying in Vietnam for three months or more converted a national licence into a Vietnamese one under Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT. A law and a decree have been adopted since, so ask the local traffic police for the current procedure.

What happens if I ride without the right licence?

It counts as riding unlicensed. Per Vietnam Tourism (16 Sep 2026), travel and rental insurance usually require a valid licence for the class you ride, and without one a claim can be refused. The fine and the impounding of the bike fall under Decree 168/2024/NĐ-CP; we give no amounts because they change. A helmet is required for the rider and the passenger: riding without one is, per the same guide, a separate offence.

Where do you get a bike in Da Lat?

Our Da Lat catalogue currently lists one rental shop: Thảo Vy, Lot A13, KQH Nguyễn Khuyến, a residential area west of the centre. Phone per Google Maps: +84 263 3988 699 (matches Toplist.vn); VinWonders (26 Jul 2025) gives a different, mobile number, so arrange things in advance. Toplist says breakdown help on the road is available round the clock, undated. Other rental shops and workshops are in transport rental. Ask the shop about its terms (age, helmet, deposit, insurance): we do not have them, and we publish no prices.

What about mountain roads and passes?

A beginner on a bike should avoid passes in rain, in fog and after dark. On 22 Sep 2026 the Lâm Đồng authorities declared an emergency over the Prenn pass, the road cars take into Da Lat from Ho Chi Minh City: there have been 8 landslides on that stretch since June and the slope is unstable. The road was not closed, but warning signs stand at both ends and drivers are asked to slow down (Tiền Phong). Earlier, from 9 to 15 January 2026, Prenn was closed for repairs after a landslide (Ministry of Construction, 8 Jan 2026). The Vietnam Airlines Nha Trang to Da Lat guide also warns of fog on the pass. Check fresh news on Prenn and Khánh Lê before you go; restrictions change.

Should you leave your passport as a deposit for a bike?

Our sources contain no official rule on deposits for bike rental. What a shop demands is up to the shop: ask in advance, and it is better not to hand over your passport, because without it a hotel cannot check you in. That is our advice, not a legal norm. Offer a cash deposit or a copy of the passport and film the bike when you collect it.

Do Grab, Xanh SM and Mai Linh work in Da Lat?
