What should I do if I lose my passport in Vietnam?
Take three steps in order.
1. Police. Get a loss report: you need it for the exit visa. If the passport is not lost but simply old, the passport itself will do. 2. Return certificate (SNV). This is a temporary document for returning to Russia without an international passport (lost, expired or damaged). It is issued in person only, after an interview. You need: the application filled in on the consulate site in Russian; a statement cancelling the lost passport; the original internal passport and a copy (without it, statements from two Russian citizens); a copy or details of the lost passport; 4 photos 35x45 mm. For a child, add the birth certificate and the parent's passport. It takes 2 days, or up to 15 days without an internal passport and witnesses. The certificate is free and valid for 14 days. Agree the date by e-mail. 3. Exit visa. You get it yourself from Vietnam's immigration service. You need: the police loss report (or the old passport), a note from the Consulate General (issued at the consulate), proof of registration at your address, a photo and form No. 5. It usually takes 3-5 working days. The note does not cancel a fine for breaking immigration rules, and the consulate does not provide an interpreter.
Can I fly via another country on the return certificate?
No. The certificate does not let you travel to a third country and no transit visa is issued on it. Fly only, preferably direct. If your visa-free stay is about to end, read the guide to visa extension and visa runs in advance.
How do I reach the consulate in an emergency?
The consulate emergency number is +84 903 084 588. Use it only when life or health is at risk: there is no information service or booking on this number. For ordinary questions use e-mail cgrushcm@yandex.ru (the subject line says what it is about, the text gives your full name and phone), Telegram t.me/cgrushcm, or fax +84 28 3930 3937.
Consulate or the embassy in Hanoi?
