Buying medicine in Hoi An: where pharmacies are, how late they open, and where to go if you are hurt or poisoned
Three pharmacies in Hoi An, hours from maps and directories, why prescription medicines are not sold without a prescription, and where to go after an injury or poisoning.
A pharmacy in Vietnamese is nhà thuốc. In Hoi An we found three private pharmacies: Huy Hoàng at 268 Lý Thường Kiệt, Thu Thảo on Lạc Long Quân street near An Bang beach, and Vạn Thiện at 116 Lê Hồng Phong. None of them is open 24 hours: maps and directories show closing between 21:00 and 23:30. Ordinary painkillers and fever reducers are sold without a prescription; prescription medicines are not sold without one by law. At night or with severe pain, do not look for a pharmacy: call the ambulance on 115 or go to a hospital. Hoi An is now three wards of the city of Da Nang: Hội An, Hội An Đông and Hội An Tây.

The hours come from Google Maps and an undated Toplist directory; we did not confirm them with the pharmacies. If you go late in the evening, check on the map that the pharmacy is open or call first. All Hoi An pharmacies on the site are in the section pharmacies in Hoi An.
Are there chain pharmacies or 24-hour ones in Hoi An?
The Long Châu chain lists a pharmacy in Hoi An on its website, at 105 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. We did not check that pharmacy's own hours, since they depend on the branch. Pharmacity's page of 24-hour pharmacies (4 June 2026) names only Da Nang, with no Hoi An address. So we cannot confirm a 24-hour pharmacy in Hoi An. What is sold without a prescription and what only with one?
Painkillers, fever reducers, plasters and allergy tablets are usually bought without a prescription. Prescription medicines, antibiotics included, are not sold without a doctor's prescription: since 15 May 2026 Decree 90/2026/NĐ-CP fines a pharmacy 10–20 million dong for doing so, twice the previous amount. If you are refused, that is the law, not fussiness. The same decree bans selling prescription medicines on online marketplaces. Show the pharmacist the active ingredient in Latin letters or a photo of the box: brand names differ in Vietnam, the active ingredient is the same. What to take when you are ill is for a doctor to decide, not the pharmacy.
Where to go after an injury or poisoning?
For severe pain, fainting, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding or serious poisoning, call the ambulance on 115, Vietnam's medical emergency number. According to LuatVietnam (16 September 2025), replacing 115 with a single number is so far only a Ministry of Health proposal, so call 115. Hoi An has two hospitals in our section hospitals in Hoi An:
- Pacific Hospital Hội An, 06 Phan Đình Phùng, Hội An Tây ward. Private, open 24 hours according to Google Maps. The name differs between directories: insurer PTI lists the hospital at this address as Sai Gon Hoi An Hospital, GOV.UK as Pacific General Hospital. Search by the address.
- Hoi An Area Medical Centre (Trung tâm Y tế khu vực Hội An, the city hospital), 04 Trần Hưng Đạo. The hospital website shows an admissions and emergency department, and the hospital was renamed in 2025. The hours in the AloBacsi directory (7:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:30) are for ordinary appointments, not for emergencies.
A minor graze or an upset stomach can be handled at a pharmacy, but if you get worse, do not wait. A pharmacy cannot help with poisoning or an injury.
What about travel insurance?
Keep the receipts and notes from the pharmacy and hospital: without them the insurer may not refund you. If you have direct-billing insurance, ask the insurer whether the hospital you need accepts it. In the PTI/FHVI list of 29 June 2026, direct billing at the hospital at 06 Phan Đình Phùng is Monday to Saturday, 7:30–16:30; outside those hours, ask your insurer.
