Getting clothes tailored in Hoi An: how to order a suit or dress and avoid disappointment

How tailoring works in Hoi An: style and fabric, measurements, one or two fittings, 24–48 hours for a suit. Why to order on day one, what to check at the fitting, how to tell silk, and how to ship clothes home.

A suit or dress in Hoi An takes a day or two to make, but order it on the first day of your trip, not the last: after measuring you need at least one or two fittings, and that is where the garment gets adjusted to you. The routine is much the same everywhere: pick a style and fabric, get measured, come back the next day for a fitting, then collect the piece or have it shipped home. Hoi An is 30 km from Da Nang, about 45 minutes by taxi; the tailors sit in and around the Old Town, and most are open 8:00–21:00.

How does ordering at a Hoi An tailor work?

The first visit to a Hoi An tailor takes about half an hour: you talk through the style, handle the fabrics and get measured. BeBe Tailor splits it into four steps — design, measure, fitting, collect; at A Dong Silk measuring takes around ten minutes and you note down your height and weight. Bring a photo, a sketch or a garment that fits you well; a reference makes the tailor's job easier. Fabric is included in the order, so you don't buy it separately. Before you pay, agree on the fabric, style, total and fitting day, and ask for it on the receipt.

How many days should you allow for tailoring in Hoi An?

A suit in Hoi An usually takes 24–48 hours, according to A Dong Silk and the Da Nang tourism portal; complicated designs take longer. Rush jobs in 4–6 hours exist too, but then there is hardly time for a second fitting. A comfortable plan: measuring on day one, fitting on day two, and day three spare for changes. If you are on a day trip from Da Nang, stick to simple pieces or arrange shipping.

What should you check at the fitting?

At a fitting in Hoi An, check how the garment feels when you move: sit down, raise your arms, walk around. Look at sleeve and trouser length, how the shoulders and collar sit, and whether the fabric pulls across the back or at the buttons. Turn it inside out: seams should be straight, edges finished and the lining sewn in without puckers. If something is off, say so at once, while there is still time to fix it. Don't take the piece without a final fitting, even if you are in a hurry.

How do you know the fabric is real silk?

Before ordering, ask what the fabric is made of and have the composition written on the receipt. Silk warms to your body temperature, while polyester feels cold and slippery. Ask the shop to burn a thread from the edge of the bolt: silk burns with a smell of singed hair, polyester melts into a hard bead. A Vietnam Silk Association mark on the label improves your odds but is no guarantee.

Can you ship clothes home from Hoi An?

Most Hoi An tailors ship abroad for an extra fee. A Dong Silk says worldwide delivery takes under a week. Thu Thuy Silk keeps measurements for up to three years, so you can reorder from home. If you leave before the piece is ready, the shop can bring it to your hotel. Before paying for shipping, ask which courier carries the parcel and how to track it.

What are A Dong Silk's hours and phone number?

A Dong Silk's website, the Vietnam Airlines guide and Google Maps each give different phone numbers and opening hours, so open the A Dong Silk page and call ahead before you go.

How do you get from Da Nang to Hoi An?

Hoi An is about 30 km south of central Da Nang, roughly 45 minutes by taxi. Taxis, buses, motorbikes and transfers are covered in getting from Da Nang to Hoi An. If you are having clothes made with fittings, staying two or three nights in Hoi An is easier than commuting every day.
