How does the south-west monsoon affect the sea from May to September?

From May to September the south-west wind blows straight onto Phu Quoc's west coast, and from June to August it blows steadily at 15–25 knots (vietnamtourism.com). At Bai Truong (Long Beach) waves of 1.5–2 m are common from June to September, the water is murky and jellyfish appear. Khem Beach, as Vietnam Airlines describes it, is sheltered by mountains and fit for swimming even in the rainy season, although the water can be murky in rainy months. On Sao Beach, vietnamtourism.com advises staying away in July and August because of the south-west wind. Bai Thom in the north-east is calmer then, but has little infrastructure.

What is the sea like in the dry season, November to March?

From November to March the north-east monsoon blows off the land, so the west coast is sheltered from the wind. Bai Truong is calm in these months, and Ong Lang beach north of Duong Dong is good for swimming from December to March (vietnamtourism.com). The east coast, by the same source, is rougher in these months, but Sao Beach is named as a good time to visit from November to April. What else to see on the island is in the attractions section.

Is it safe to swim on Phu Quoc?

Swim where the water is calm and there are signs, and stay out if a red flag is up or the waves look much bigger than usual. We found no data on rip currents or drownings on Phu Quoc in verified sources, so there are no figures. From June to September Bai Truong has waves up to 1.5–2 m (vietnamtourism.com): children and weak swimmers are better off in a sheltered bay such as Khem Beach. Ask your hotel which beach is calmer today.

Do storms happen and are ferries cancelled?

Yes: in rough seas the high-speed boats and ferries from the mainland do not run. On 13 July 2024 all passenger services between Phu Quoc and the ports of Ha Tien and Rach Gia were stopped because of bad weather, and resumption depended on the weather (VOH). On 27 September 2022 boats to Phu Quoc were stopped because of Storm No. 4 (SGGP). vietnamtourism.com calls September the worst month of the year for wind and rain. If you travel from May to October, keep a spare day and check transfers; tickets can be refunded or moved through the agent.

When is Phu Quoc busiest?

Most tourists come from November to January: vietnamtourism.com calls November the start of the high season and December and January busy with expensive hotels. Tet adds more crowds; its date changes every year (in 2026 it was 17 February), so check the calendar for your year. We found no verified figures on visitor numbers or Russian tourists, so we give none. Book accommodation and trips ahead for holidays: tours and travel agencies, diving.

What does "Kien Giang is now An Giang" and "special zone" mean?

Since 1 July 2025 Kien Giang no longer exists as a separate province: it was merged with An Giang into An Giang province (National Assembly Resolution 202/2025/QH15, Article 1). Phu Quoc became a special zone (đặc khu) within An Giang — so writes SGGP, citing Resolution 1654/NQ-UBTVQH15 of 16 June 2025. Maps and older articles still say "Phu Quoc city" and "Kien Giang" — it is the same island.
