How do I find the Phu Quoc night market?
Search for "Phu Quoc Night Market", "chợ đêm Bạch Đằng" or "Dinh Cậu night market": it is one market in Duong Dong, on Bạch Đằng Street near the Dinh Cậu temple-lighthouse. Dinh Cậu and Bạch Đằng used to be two markets: in July 2016 the island authorities were moving the Dinh Cậu traders to a former shopping centre next to Bạch Đằng (Tuổi Trẻ, 5 July 2016), and a VinWonders guide (12 July 2025) describes the market as merged, at 6 Bạch Đằng. The names are still mixed up, so pin the market on your map by the street name.
When does the night market open, and when should I go?
The market opens in the evening and closes around 11 pm; exact times depend on the season and the weather. It is busiest from about 7:30 to 10 pm. To pick a place to eat without a crowd, arrive around 5–6 pm. Food and dried seafood are near the entrance; souvenirs, jewellery and pearls are further in. Individual stalls keep their own hours, so do not leave your shopping until closing time.
What is there to eat, and how do I avoid overpaying for seafood?
At the night market seafood is grilled or boiled in front of you, and nearby stalls sell bánh khọt, rolled ice cream and fresh juice. Ask the price before you order, especially for fish or shellfish sold by weight: have them name the total for your portion. Pick busy stalls, as travel guides advise. Keep your phone and wallet close in the crowd. Stalls mostly take cash; how to pay on the island is covered in money on Phu Quoc.
When should I go to Duong Dong Market?
Go to Duong Dong Market early: it opens around 4–5 am and runs until evening, while the good crab and fish are gone by 7–8 am (Vietnamnet, 29 Nov 2014). It sells fresh seafood, dried fish, fish sauce and local specialities. The market sits by the Duong Dong river — use the pin on the map. Ask the seller to cut a fish open so you can see the flesh: fresh fish is shiny and firm.
What makes Ham Ninh Market different?
Ham Ninh Market sits by the old fishing village on the east coast, at the foot of Ham Ninh mountain. People buy fresh crab, clams and squid there, and vendors can cook your purchase on the spot. It is open all day, but the choice is best early in the morning when the boats come in. In the south, An Thoi Market on Nguyễn Văn Cừ Street is handier if you stay near Sunset Town or take the cable car. It closes in the evening, so come in the morning.
What can I take home from Phu Quoc?
People bring back fish sauce, pepper, dried seafood, jams, pearls, lacquerware and sim wine (rượu sim). They are sold at the night market and in shops such as KingKong Mart (Vietnam Airlines, VinWonders, 2025). Buy fish sauce and pearls with a label and a certificate, from a seller who gives a receipt.
What does "Phú Quốc" on a fish sauce bottle mean?
"Phú Quốc" is a protected designation of origin in the European Union: only sauce made and bottled on Phu Quoc island may be sold under that name (Tạp chí Công Thương, 20 Aug 2013). The word on the bottle is not enough, so check the producer and address on the label and buy from a shop that gives a receipt.
Can I take fish sauce on a plane?
Vietnam Airlines accepts fish sauce on its own flights, except ATR72 aircraft, and recommends putting it in checked baggage. The airline's rules: up to 3 litres or 3 kg per passenger, plastic bottles with tight caps, each wrapped in tape and filled to no more than 95%, all in a taped-shut foam box. If you fly another airline, check its rules — some do not carry odorous baggage. Rules change, so check the airline site before you fly.
Where do I buy everyday groceries?
For everyday shopping, a supermarket in Duong Dong is simplest. KingKong Mart on Trần Hưng Đạo is open from 8 am to 10–11 pm, takes Visa, Mastercard and JCB, and has parking. CMART, at number 129 on the same street, is open 8 am to 10 pm. Kai Mart at 339B Nguyễn Trung Trực opens at 7:30 am. If you stay near Bãi Trường, TR Mart in TR Mall is closer, open 8 am to 11 pm.
How do I avoid overpaying at a market?
Ask the price first, compare it in two or three shops and bargain politely — the Vietnam Airlines guide advises this for souvenirs. For food, just confirm the portion and the total. For souvenirs, pearls and fish sauce, ask for a receipt and read the label.
