In Da Nang you buy a SIM with your passport at a Viettel, MobiFone, VinaPhone or Vietnamobile store, or at an airport counter. Is a passport needed, eSIM or SIM, and what changed on 15 April 2026.

Buy your SIM in Da Nang with your original passport — at a Viettel, MobiFone, VinaPhone or Vietnamobile store, or at a counter at the airport. Make sure it is registered in your name: since 15 April 2026 a SIM registered to someone else can stop working. All stores and points are listed in the mobile and SIM cards section.

Where can I buy a SIM at Da Nang airport?

The SIM counters at Da Nang International Airport (DAD) are in the baggage claim area, according to the city's tourism portal, Danang Fantasticity (June 2026). If you're here for a week or two, it's the quickest option. Ask for the SIM to be registered to your passport and check that it works before you step away from the counter.

Addresses and hours come from the store finders on the operators' own websites (looked at on 22 October 2026). Ngô Quyền street has stores from three operators close together, which is handy if you stay on the Sơn Trà side. The VNPT store on Ngô Quyền shuts for lunch and is closed on Sundays. If you're staying longer than a couple of weeks, buy in a town store: any later re-check happens there too.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM?

Yes, the original passport. A foreigner's SIM is registered to the passport and the identity check is done on the spot, in the store. Don't leave your passport "for a couple of hours" — registration is done while you wait and the passport is handed back right away.

What changed on 15 April 2026?

That's when Circular 08/2026/TT-BKHCN from the Ministry of Science and Technology took effect. For a foreigner who registered a SIM with a passport, the check is done in person: at an operator store or at a point the operator has authorised. Existing passport-registered SIMs were due to be re-verified within 60 days of 15 April. If you get a message asking you to verify, go to your operator's store with your passport and the SIM.

What if I move my SIM to another phone?

Since 15 June 2026 (Article 8 of the same circular), after you put the SIM in a different phone the operator can cut outgoing calls within two hours until you redo the face check. If you plan to switch phones, allow time for a store visit with your passport and the SIM.

eSIM or SIM: which should I get?

A physical SIM works in any phone and is ready as soon as it's registered at the airport or in a store. An eSIM can be set up online, but your phone has to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Viettel sells tourist SIMs and eSIMs at tourist.viettel.vn: you upload a photo of your passport's photo page and a selfie. MobiFone's Hi Vietnam app issues an eSIM inside the app, with a passport photo, a short video call and an e-signature. Not sure your phone handles eSIM? Take a regular SIM.

How do I top up?

At the operator store, with a top-up card from a convenience shop, or in the operator's app. Ask which options work for your SIM when you buy it.

Where can I see an operator's packages and tariffs?

Each operator's current packages are on its official website, and prices change, so check on the day you buy. MobiFone lists packages on its home page, mobifone.vn; VinaPhone has a “Gói Data” section on vnpt.vn. With Viettel you pick the tariff at the last step (“Plan”) of the tourist SIM order on tourist.viettel.vn. The pages are in Vietnamese, but package names and data allowances are easy to read.

Renting a scooter too? See renting a motorbike in Da Nang for the licence you need and what to check at pickup. Your phone's map needs data on the road.

Sources and checks

Store addresses and hours come from the store finders on the Viettel, MobiFone, VNPT and Vietnamobile websites, looked at on 22 October 2026. The addresses already use the new ward names introduced after Da Nang merged with Quảng Nam province in 2025, so a map app may still show the old district name. Subscriber check rules are from Circular 08/2026/TT-BKHCN: the effective dates (15 April 2026; Article 8 from 15 June 2026) come from the Vietnamese government portal, the procedure from the text on LuatVietnam. The airport SIM counters are from the city's tourism portal Danang Fantasticity (article of 15 June 2026). eSIM details are from the Viettel and MobiFone websites. Updated 26 October 2026.
