My rental motorbike broke down. Where do I take it?

Call the rental shop first — almost all of them keep their own mechanic and will cover the repair if the fault was not your doing. A repair you arrange yourself, without asking, is much harder to claim back afterwards. If you cannot reach them and you need to move, any workshop will do: a puncture or a slipped chain takes minutes and there is a shop in most streets.

Authorised dealer or the workshop on the corner?

An authorised centre — a Honda HEAD, a Yamaha Town, a car brand dealership — works to the manufacturer’s procedures, fits original parts and gives you paperwork. A local workshop is faster and simpler, but parts and any guarantee are at the mechanic’s discretion. For a car still under warranty there is no choice: service it anywhere but the dealer and the warranty lapses.

How do I explain the problem without Vietnamese?

Show rather than tell. Record a video of the noise or the behaviour before you go, and point at the part. A phone translator handles component names better than you would expect. Ask for the price and the time before work starts, and ask for the figure to be written down — it removes most of the room for misunderstanding on both sides.

What do I do about a puncture?

Look for a sign saying “vá xe” or “vá lốp” — that is a tyre repair shop, there are many and they work late. A puncture is patched on the spot in a few minutes. If the tyre goes down far from town you can usually push the bike: riding on a flat destroys the rim quickly and turns a cheap repair into an expensive one.

Why are there no prices in the listings?

What a repair costs depends on what actually failed, and that is only established after someone looks at it. Publishing a price in advance would set an expectation nobody can keep. Ask for an estimate before work begins, and ask to be told if something else turns up along the way.
