Do I need a licence to ride a motorbike here?

For anything above 50cc, Vietnamese rules require a national licence with category A plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention — which is what the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan issue — are not recognised in Vietnam. In practice rental shops hand over a bike without asking for anything, but that does not make the ride legal: you risk a fine at a checkpoint, and after a crash your insurer will decline precisely because you had no licence. Rules and enforcement change, so check the current position before you travel. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice.

What should I check before riding away?

Brakes, lights, indicators, horn, tyre wear and the fuel level. Walk around the bike and photograph every scratch and dent before you leave, so that existing damage does not become your bill later. Check that you are given a helmet — they are compulsory for rider and passenger — and ask for a number to call if the bike dies on the road.

They want to keep my passport as a deposit. Is that normal?

Many rental shops ask, but you do not have to hand over the original and you should not: you need your passport for hotels, banks and flights, and losing it turns into a long consular problem. Offer a photocopy or a cash deposit instead — most shops agree. A shop that insists on the original and will accept nothing else is a good reason to try the next one.

What about insurance?

Rental bikes typically carry only compulsory third-party cover, which at best pays for damage to someone else — not to you and not to the bike. Your travel policy most likely excludes motorbike injuries when you have no category A licence; that exclusion is standard in almost every policy sold. Read yours before you get on the bike rather than after.

Why are there no prices in the listings?

Rental rates vary by model, season and rental length, and no public source keeps them current. A stale price is worse than none: the reader plans around it and hears something else. Ask when you book, and ask what is included — helmet, delivery, fuel.
