Frequently asked questions
Can a foreigner buy a SIM card in Vietnam?
Yes, against a passport: the SIM is registered to its owner, and under current law you need the original passport and details of your visa or temporary residence card. It is done at an operator shop or kiosk. Make sure the seller registers the SIM in your name — an unregistered SIM may stop working.
What changed in April 2026?
From 15 April 2026 new subscribers go through face verification and existing SIMs through a repeat data check. According to Tuoi Tre (14 April 2026), foreigners who registered a SIM by passport must go to an operator shop in person with the passport and the SIM; unlike Vietnamese citizens using VNeID, there is no remote option. Unverified SIMs first lose outgoing service and can then be cut off. Deadlines for foreigners are not stated separately — ask at the shop.
What if my SIM was bought at the airport or from a private seller?
It may be registered to someone else. In a Google Maps review (August 2026) a visitor writes that she used an airport SIM registered to a stranger for two years and had to go through verification again. If you need the SIM for a long stay, register it in your own name at an operator shop.
How do I top up?
At an operator shop, with a top-up card from stores, in the operator app or through e-wallets. Options depend on the operator and your SIM — ask at the shop. We do not publish amounts.
Why no tariffs or operator rankings?
We check what can be checked: the shop exists and works at that address, and the rules come from dated sources. Tariffs change, and "the best operator" depends on the district and cannot be verified from public sources.
