First days in Nha Trang: what to sort out right after you land
The order for your first day in Nha Trang: SIM, money, getting in from Cam Ranh airport, a bike, what to do if you fall ill, a place to stay for a month. Short answers and where to find addresses.
Right after you land in Nha Trang, sort out five things: buy a SIM at an operator store, change money at a bank or a licensed agent, and get into town by metered taxi or a booked transfer. Then a motorbike if your licence covers it, and a hospital to go to if you get sick. Staying for the winter? Add a monthly rental. Each step below is short, with links to addresses.
Where do you buy a SIM card?
A foreigner gets a SIM against a passport at an operator's store — Viettel, VinaPhone, MobiFone or Vietnamobile. Since April 2026 Vietnam has been checking subscriber data, so do not take a SIM registered to someone else. Details and store addresses are in the guide Buying a SIM card in Nha Trang as a foreigner and in the mobile and SIM cards section.
Where do you change money?
In Vietnam you can exchange currency at a bank or at a licensed exchange agent; anything else is prohibited, and the risk is yours. You can withdraw cash at an ATM, but not every branch opens an account for a tourist: Vietcombank in Nha Trang does not open one on a tourist visa. How do you get from Cam Ranh airport to the city?
The airport is about thirty-five kilometres south of Nha Trang: 40–50 minutes by car and up to an hour and a half by bus. Your options are a metered taxi at the official rank, the Grab and Be apps, a private transfer, or the bus — all covered in getting from Cam Ranh airport to Nha Trang. For a night flight, book the transfer in advance. Operators are listed in the transfers section.
How do you get around town?
The everyday way to get around is a motorbike. Vietnam recognises an international driving permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention, but it does not replace a motorcycle category on your home licence. A helmet is mandatory for rider and passenger; film the bike on pickup and do not leave your passport as a deposit. It is all in renting a motorbike in Nha Trang and the transport rental section.
What if you get sick?
The ambulance number in Vietnam is 115, but the dispatcher speaks Vietnamese, so it is usually easier to take a taxi or Grab straight to the emergency room (cấp cứu). The provincial hospital, hospital 22-12 and the private Vinmec take patients around the clock. Save your accommodation address in Latin letters and your insurer's assistance number on your phone, and photograph bills and medical reports right away. Addresses and steps are in if you fall ill in Nha Trang and the hospitals and clinics section.
How do you rent a place for a month?
For a winter stay, homes are rented directly by owners and through agencies. View the flat yourself or on a live video call, do not pay a "booking" deposit before the viewing, check that the contract names the deposit, the term and the exit conditions, and ask about registration of your place of stay. Frequently asked questions
What should I do first after landing in Nha Trang? Buy a SIM at an operator's store against your passport, then get to your accommodation by taxi, app or a pre-booked transfer. Exchange money only at a bank or a licensed agent.
Does a tourist need a local SIM card? It helps with maps, taxis and contacting your accommodation. It is issued against a passport at an operator's store; a SIM from a street seller or registered to another person is a risk.
Where can I legally exchange money in Nha Trang? At a bank or at a licensed currency exchange agent with a "Đại lý đổi ngoại tệ" sign. Exchange outside them is prohibited in Vietnam.
