Frequently asked questions
What is the emergency number in Vietnam?
Dial 115 for an ambulance (113 is police, 114 fire). The dispatcher speaks Vietnamese, so keep your address written down or ask hotel staff to make the call. Many people simply take a taxi or Grab to the emergency department — cấp cứu in Vietnamese — of a general hospital; in a city this size that is often quicker. Each listing says whether the hospital has an emergency department where a source confirms it.
Is there an English-speaking hospital in Nha Trang?
Private hospitals and clinics are the likeliest to have English-speaking doctors or front-desk staff; public hospitals often do not. A listing names a language only when a source confirms it. If you end up somewhere nobody speaks English, a translation app does the job: download Vietnamese for offline use and write down your symptoms, allergies and regular medicines in advance.
How does travel insurance work here?
If you can, call your insurer's assistance line before you go: they will tell you which hospital they have an agreement with and whether they can pay the hospital directly. If you pay yourself, keep the itemised invoice (hóa đơn), the medical report with the diagnosis and the pharmacy receipts — claims are rarely paid without them. Check your excess: a short consultation may fall entirely within it.
Public or private hospital?
Public hospitals are larger, with a round-the-clock emergency department and most specialities under one roof, but expect queues and Vietnamese only. Private hospitals and clinics tend to see you faster, are more used to travel insurance and more likely to speak English, but they do not treat everything on site and transfer complex cases to a larger hospital. The military hospital accepts civilian patients too.
