Buying medicine in Da Nang: what is open at night, prescriptions and how to explain

Two Pharmacity pharmacies in Da Nang are open 24 hours. Which ones open early or close late, what to show the pharmacist, when you need a prescription (Decree 90/2026) and how to avoid fake medicine.

Two Pharmacity pharmacies in Da Nang are open 24 hours — at 186 Lê Duẩn and 189 Nguyễn Văn Thoại; the rest close in the evening. Addresses and hours of every pharmacy in the city are in the Da Nang pharmacies section. Painkillers, fever reducers, plasters and allergy tablets are sold without a prescription: show the pharmacist the active ingredient or a photo of the pack. Prescription drugs, antibiotics included, are sold only with a doctor's prescription — since 15 May 2026 a pharmacy that sells them without one faces a fine twice as high as before.

Is there a 24-hour pharmacy in Da Nang?

Yes. The Pharmacity chain lists two 24-hour pharmacies in Da Nang: 186 Lê Duẩn (Thanh Khê district, centre) and 189 Nguyễn Văn Thoại (An Hải district, east bank, closer to the sea). The other pharmacies in the table close between 21:30 and 23:30. If you feel unwell at night, do not hunt for a pharmacy — go to a hospital; addresses are in hospitals in Da Nang: where a foreigner should go.

Where can I buy medicine early in the morning or late in the evening?

Late in the evening, besides the 24-hour Pharmacity stores, Pharmacity at 242 Trần Hưng Đạo is open until 23:30. Early in the morning near My Khe beach, Phước Thành Tâm at 59 Lương Thế Vinh opens around 5:30–6:00 and Việt Mỹ at 60 Loseby at 6:30. Long Châu at 65 Nguyễn Văn Thoại is open 7:00–22:00. If you are heading to one particular pharmacy, call first: hours sometimes change.

Is there a pharmacy in Da Nang where they speak Russian?

Expect the pharmacist to speak only Vietnamese. Show the active ingredient in Latin letters, a photo of the pack or a phrase in a translator app, as in the block "How do I explain to the pharmacist what I need?". If you need to talk to a doctor rather than a pharmacist, see the hospitals and clinics section and call ahead.

How do I explain to the pharmacist what I need?

The pharmacist may not speak English, so:

  • show the active ingredient in Latin letters — it is printed in small type on the pack under the brand; brands differ in Vietnam, the ingredient is the same;
  • photograph the pack of your medicine before you leave home;
  • keep a translator app on your phone with Vietnamese downloaded.

A few words: nhà thuốc — pharmacy, đơn thuốc — prescription, thuốc hạ sốt — fever reducer, thuốc giảm đau — painkiller, dị ứng — allergy, huyết áp — blood pressure.

Do I need a prescription at a pharmacy in Da Nang?

For prescription drugs, yes. Since 15 May 2026 Decree 90/2026/NĐ-CP has been in force: a pharmacy that sells a prescription drug without a doctor's prescription is fined 10–20 million dong, twice the previous level. Quang Ngai provincial police, explaining the decree, tie it directly to the years in which antibiotics in Vietnam were bought without a doctor. So if a pharmacy refuses, it is the law, not fussiness. The decree also bans selling prescription drugs through online marketplaces.

What can I buy without a prescription?

In Vietnam only drugs on the Ministry of Health's non-prescription list are sold without a prescription; the list is open on the Drug Administration portal. A prescription drug is easy to spot on the box: an "Rx" mark and the words "Thuốc kê đơn" above the name on the left, as the Ministry of Health labelling rule (Circular 01/2018/TT-BYT) requires. If you see "Rx", a pharmacy cannot sell it without a doctor's prescription. What suits you is for a doctor or pharmacist to decide.

What if I need a prescription or my tablets have run out?

See a doctor: they will write a prescription, and the pharmacy will find the same ingredient under a local brand. If you take medicine regularly, for example for blood pressure, bring enough for the whole trip and a prescription or doctor's note naming the ingredient. Clinics and hospitals are in the hospitals and clinics section.

How do I avoid fake medicine?

Buy medicine at a pharmacy with a sign and a fixed address, not at a market, from street sellers or on social media — that is the advice of the Drug Administration of Vietnam. The box carries a registration number: enter it or the name in the open drug register, which shows the active ingredient, dose and manufacturer. Not in the register — do not buy it. The risk is real: according to the WHO, at least one in ten medicines in low- and middle-income countries is substandard or falsified.

What medicines can I bring into Vietnam?

Medicines for your own treatment can be brought in without an import permit, says the Embassy of Vietnam in Australia. The pack must show the name, active ingredient, dose and expiry date. Carry a doctor's prescription: your name and age, the drug name and dose, the doctor's signature and address. Narcotic drugs: no more than 7 days' supply; psychotropic drugs: no more than 10 days; both are declared at customs. If you are bringing a strong medicine, check the rules with the Vietnamese embassy in your country before you travel.

Are there pharmacies in Hoi An?

Yes. Hoi An has been part of Da Nang city since July 2025, and there is a Long Châu at 105 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. If you go to Hoi An for a day, take the tablets you need with you.

What should I keep for my insurer?

Pharmacy receipts and the prescription: without them the insurer may refuse to pay you back. Photograph everything straight away.

If you have just landed and need to reach your hotel, read from Da Nang airport to the city and Hoi An.
