Hoi An Old Town Combined Ticket: Do You Need It, What It Covers and Where to Buy

You can walk Hoi An's old town streets without a ticket. The ticket is for going inside old houses, assembly halls, museums and the Japanese Bridge. What it covers, how long it lasts, where to buy it and what if nobody asks.

Short answer: to simply walk the streets of Hoi An's old town and see the lights in the evening, you do not need a ticket. You need one to go inside the old houses, assembly halls, museums and temples. According to Vietnam Airlines and MIA.vn, the ticket lets you visit five sites from a list; Vietnam Airlines gives a validity of 24 hours, and the Heritage Centre's official page gives none. We do not quote the price: check at the ticket counter or on the Hoi An World Heritage Conservation Centre website. Since 1 July 2025 Hội An (Hoi An) has been three wards of Da Nang city.

Do you need a ticket just to walk around the old town?

No, a walk along the streets needs no ticket: Vietnam Airlines says walking around town is free, and MIA.vn says strolling, taking photos and walking along the Hoai riverbank is free. Tickets are checked at the sites that belong to the scheme. In 2023 the authorities discussed making a ticket compulsory for everyone entering the old town; at the same time the mayor said it was not compulsory for individual visitors and that checks target groups. We found no recent official confirmation that the rule was applied to everyone. If you are asked for a ticket at the edge of the zone, ask at the counter what exactly is required.

What does the combined ticket give you and how many sites?

The ticket opens a number of old-town sites of your choice. The Centre's official page describes two types of ticket. The basic one: one of two sites, the Japanese Bridge (Chùa Cầu) or the Quan Cong Temple (Miếu Quan Công), plus two more sites of your choice. The extended one: the bridge or the temple, the museum system (your choice) and three more sites of your choice. Vietnam Airlines and MIA.vn (06.08.2026) say it more simply: five sites from the list. Ask the cashier which type is sold now before you pay: the sources differ.

How long is the ticket valid?

Vietnam Airlines says the ticket is valid for 24 hours. The Centre's official page gives no validity, and MIA.vn does not state one either. Keep the ticket stub until the end of the day: according to the Centre, it is needed to enter and leave the old town. Plan your sites for one day and confirm the validity at the counter.

Where do you buy the ticket?

Ticket counters stand at the entrances to the old town (MIA.vn, 06.08.2026). The Centre asks visitors to buy a ticket before entering the old town. The Heritage Conservation Centre is at 10B Trần Hưng Đạo, phone +84 843 428 888 (the same building as the Hoi An Museum of History and Culture). Exact counter addresses are not given in the sources: look for the signs at the entrances.

Which sites can you choose?

According to MIA.vn (06.08.2026), the list includes old houses, assembly halls, temples, museums and family chapels. Our guide includes these places; the table below gives their addresses.

The list can change, so check at the counter. MIA.vn's list also names other places (for example the Nguyen family chapel and a handicraft workshop) that are not in our guide. The full list is at the counter.

What if nobody asks for the ticket?

The ticket is checked at the entrance to the sites and, according to the Centre, is needed to enter and leave the old town. If nobody asks on the street, that does not mean you can walk into a house for free: you will be asked at the entrance of a site. A walk along the streets stays free. Buy the ticket before your first site so you do not have to walk back.

What costs extra?

The site ticket does not cover everything. Vietnam Tourism says there is no separate ticket for lantern night, though some parts of the old town admit only holders of the regular ticket. The Centre separately mentions a tea ceremony at the Japanese culture house (9:30 and 16:30) and the "night street" with folk games; the source does not say whether they are paid. Boats, lanterns for the river and workshops are paid on the spot: ask the seller the price.

What are the opening hours?

The Centre gives the pedestrian street hours: the old town from 9:00 to 21:30 in summer and to 21:00 in winter. The city's 2023 plan gave the daytime programme as 7:30–18:00. Ask at the counter for your site's hours. At Tet 2026 (16–19 February) ticket sales and tours were paused, while private and communal houses stayed open for rituals.

Does a group get a guide?

According to the Centre, a group buying 8 or more tickets gets a free guide who explains the sites in the ticket zones.

Where can you find the other places in Hoi An?

All places in the old town and around it are in the Hoi An sights section. For what to see in the old town itself, read "Hoi An: what to see in the old town". For getting around, see Transfers and Transport rental. Lantern night has its own guide: "Hoi An lantern night".
