Which áo dài do I need?
Say what the occasion is and the shop will pick — easier than learning the styles.
- For a photo shoot or a walk — light fabric, no heavy embroidery.
- For a wedding or rites — heavier fabric, embroidery, often with the khăn đóng headpiece.
- Cách tân — a modern cut, shorter and looser, worn with a skirt or trousers.
Bưng quả is the ceremony where the groom's family carries gifts to the bride's home. If you are invited to one, look for shops that name it.
Why come for a fitting early?
An áo dài is meant to fit closely, so a rental is almost always taken in at the waist and shoulders and hemmed. That takes time, and in wedding season and before Tết shops are busy. "Fitting in the morning, shoot in the evening" often ends with a dress that does not fit.
What should I ask before the fitting?
- How many days you keep it and how they count.
- Whether alterations are included and when it will be ready.
- The deposit: how much, what it covers, when you get it back.
- Whether the khăn đóng, shoes and jewellery are included.
- Who cleans it after return and what happens if it gets stained.
How do I explain without Vietnamese?
Show a photo and write the occasion: "chụp ảnh" — photo shoot, "đám cưới" — wedding, "tốt nghiệp" — graduation. "Thuê áo dài" means renting an áo dài. Áo dài Yến Yến speaks only Vietnamese, so plan for that.
