Tipping in Vietnam: do you need to tip, and who
Tipping in Vietnam is optional: street eateries and simple cafés don't expect it, while guides, spa therapists and private drivers are tipped most often. What the official Vietnam tourism site says and how to check your bill.
Short answer: tipping in Vietnam is optional. The official Vietnam tourism website says it plainly: you are under no obligation to tip, but if the service deserves it, feel free. Tips are most common for tour guides and in spas, less so in restaurants. Street eateries and simple cafés don't expect them.
Do you have to tip in Vietnam?
No. Vietnam's tourism authority writes on vietnam.travel: "If you feel the service warrants a tip, feel free, but you are under no obligation to tip in Vietnam." Lonely Planet, in its 10 August 2026 update, adds that most Vietnamese people don't tip in restaurants or taxis themselves. So if you don't tip, nobody will be offended.
Who do people tip in Vietnam?
People who serve you personally: a tour guide, a spa or massage therapist, a private driver for the day. All the sources agree on this — vietnam.travel and Lonely Planet alike. A Tuổi Trẻ News column (March 2024) describes massage and spa as the place where a tip is close to expected. Should you tip in cafés and restaurants?
At a street eatery (quán) or a simple café — no, it isn't done. At a tourist restaurant you can leave the change if the service was good. Before adding anything, read the bill: some restaurants already add a separate service line — "phí phục vụ" or "service charge", as VnExpress International has reported. If it's there, the tip is already included.
Do you tip taxi drivers?
Not necessarily. Lonely Planet says Vietnamese passengers don't tip in taxis; a Tuổi Trẻ News column says drivers who work with tourists expect it. The simple answer: leave the change if the ride was fine. How to get a taxi: Taxis in Nha Trang.
How should you give a tip?
In dong, handed directly to the person you're thanking, without making a show of it. Paying in foreign currency is not allowed in Vietnam, so tips are best given in dong too. Keep a few small notes handy: handing over a big one and asking for change is awkward.
FAQ
Is tipping mandatory in Vietnam? No. The official Vietnam tourism website says there is no obligation. A tip is a thank-you for good service.
How much should I tip in Vietnam? There is no official norm. In cafés and restaurants people usually leave the change; for a guide, a therapist or a driver it depends on how happy you are. Guidebooks give different amounts.
Should I tip a massage therapist? In spas it is customary: both the Vietnam tourism site and Lonely Planet name spas and massage as the place where people tip most.
What is phí phục vụ on the bill? A service charge the restaurant has already added. If that line is there, you don't need to tip on top.
Can I tip in US dollars? Better in dong: paying in foreign currency is not allowed in Vietnam, and dong is easier for the person receiving it. How to change money: Changing money in Nha Trang.
