How do I get from Da Nang airport (DAD) to Hoi An?
Da Nang airport is the closest to Hoi An: about 30 km to the old town, usually 40-55 minutes by car. Vietnamtourism (updated 7 October 2026) gives 45-60 minutes, and up to 75 in rush hour or near the Dragon Bridge. Taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun) and Grab pick up at the terminal; order a Grab after you collect your bags. For four or more people or large luggage, pick a seven-seat car. A Grab bike only suits a backpack. If you land late at night, agree on a pick-up with your hotel or a transfer company beforehand: there is less transport at night. The road from the airport into the city is covered in our guide from Da Nang airport to the city, and companies that drive to Hoi An are in the Hoi An transfers section.
How do I get from Da Nang to Hoi An by bus?
Bus 1 runs from Da Nang airport to the Hoi An bus station. The stop is 200 metres from the terminal, buses leave every 20-30 minutes and the ride takes 60-90 minutes (Vietnamtourism, 7 October 2026). The bus station is about 2 km from the old town, so you walk or take a short taxi ride. Guides disagree on the timetable and in the evening the bus may not run, so ask about the last departure before you go. Other options from the city of Da Nang, such as a rented motorbike, a taxi or a booked minibus, are in our guide from Da Nang to Hoi An.
Can I fly into Chu Lai (VCL) and travel on to Hoi An?
You can, but it takes longer: Chu Lai is about 88 km from Hoi An, 2-2.5 hours by car (Sun Paradise Land, 17 August 2026; Vietnam Booking, 28 August 2026). Chu Lai is in the south of the former Quang Nam province, now part of Da Nang city. According to Vietjet's page, flights run to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, but the page shows no update date, so check the timetable with the airline. If tickets to Da Nang and to Chu Lai cost about the same, choose Da Nang: it is about three times closer. During typhoon season both airports can close for a few hours: on 11 October 2020 storm No. 6 stopped both Da Nang and Chu Lai (Tuổi Trẻ).

From Ho Chi Minh City the train takes 17-19 hours and the bus 15-16 (VinWonders, 13 July 2025). From Da Nang the last 30 km to Hoi An is the same taxi, Grab or bus 1. Should I take a taxi, Grab or a transfer from the airport to my hotel?
If you have a lot of luggage or arrive at night, book a transfer ahead through your hotel or a company. The Hoi An transfers section has a card for Hoi An Express (30/2 Trần Hưng Đạo). A taxi or Grab is easier when you arrive by day and travel without a group. If your hotel is inside the old town, the car will drop you at the edge of the pedestrian zone rather than at the door, because motor vehicles are kept out.
Can I drive a car, ride a motorbike or cycle around the old town?
Cars are not allowed into Hoi An's old town at any hour, and motorbikes are banned from 9:00 to 21:00 every day; residents and people who work there may enter between 11:00 and 15:00 (Tuổi Trẻ, 15 October 2024). Since May 2023 Phan Châu Trinh street has been closed to motor traffic in the evening (17:30-21:30 in summer, until 21:00 in winter), with a later plan to start at 15:00 (Tuổi Trẻ, 15 May 2023). The hours have changed over the years: in 2016 the heritage centre gave 9:00-11:00 and 15:00-22:00 in the dry season, while a Mia.vn guide (24 July 2026) lists 9:00-11:00 and 15:00-21:30 in summer, until 21:00 in winter. Go by the signs at the entrances. Cycling in the old town is allowed and guides recommend renting a bike (Mia.vn). Entry to the old town itself requires a ticket; ask at the ticket office how long it stays valid. For trips beyond the old town, see transport rental.
