They pick you up from your hotel; boat and tackle are included. The sea is calm roughly from February to August; from October to December the monsoon cancels trips. Night squid or day fishing?
Squid is a short evening trip close to shore. The boat anchors, bright lamps go on and the squid come to the light. The tackle is simple — a line with a lure you jig up and down; you learn in five minutes. The catch is usually cooked straight away. A good choice with school-age children and for anyone prone to seasickness, since you do not go far.
Day fishing is half a day out to the islands with rods, lunch, snorkelling and a beach stop. It is more of a boat trip with fishing as the main activity: longer, more sun and more dependent on the weather.
The same firms often sell both, so say clearly what you want: "câu mực đêm" is night squid, "câu cá ban ngày" is day fishing.
When is the sea calm?
February to August. October to December is monsoon season: wind and swell, and trips get cancelled — rightly. Travelling in between? Ask what happens if the trip is called off: a new date or a refund.
How do I book without Vietnamese?
Message the number on the listing on Zalo or by phone: date, number of people, any children, hotel address. Any translation app handles short sentences well. What should I ask before paying?
- Shared boat or private, and how many people on board.
- Whether there are life jackets, including children's sizes. Ask this first: the answer shows how the firm treats safety.
- How long it takes to reach the spot and how long the fishing itself lasts.
- What happens if the weather cancels the trip.
- Whether the catch is cooked on board and whether you can take it with you.
What should I bring?
A windbreaker — it is cooler on the water at night than on shore. Water. A seasickness tablet, taken half an hour before you set off, not once you feel ill. Shoes you do not mind getting wet. For a day trip, sunscreen and a hat: you burn faster on the water than on the beach.
