Why are these tour agencies rather than fishing charters?

Because fishing charters in the Western sense do not exist here. We found no boat that makes its living from fishing and publishes a schedule. What exists is tour companies that gather a group and hire a wooden boat from local fishermen, and the fishermen themselves at the Hon Ro and Cau Da quays — with no company name, no registration and no phone number anyone can verify. We cannot list the second kind: a listing with no checkable contact is no use to you. So these are the first kind, and we would rather say so plainly.

Day fishing or night squid fishing?

Two different trips. Day fishing leaves in the morning for a few hours, usually with a snorkelling stop and lunch aboard. Squid fishing leaves in the late afternoon: the boat anchors, switches on its lamps, and the squid come to the light. The catch is normally cooked on the spot. The night trip is the gentler one physically, but you get back late — worth remembering if you fly the next morning.

What language will the guide speak?

Vietnamese, almost certainly. Unlike diving, where certification registers list staff languages, none of the companies here document English-speaking guides in their own sources. Ask when you book, and do not read a missing note in a listing as evidence either way — we record a language only where a source states it. What should I bring, and what should I ask?

A hat, sunscreen, and something for seasickness if you are prone to it — the bay is not always calm. Ask whether tackle and bait are included (usually yes), how many people will be aboard, whether there are life jackets, and what happens if the weather cancels. The sea here closes wholesale: under a storm warning nobody sails, and you want that agreed before you pay, not after.

When is the best time to go?

February to September the sea is usually calm. October to January brings rain and the north-east wind: cancellations are frequent, sometimes on the morning itself. If your trip is tied to one fixed day, keep a spare.

Can I keep what I catch?

It is normally cooked aboard, which is half the point of the trip. If you want to take it away, say so in advance — a small boat may carry no ice. And do not count on the catch as your meal: fish do not always bite, which is why food is usually included separately.
