What can I see in central Nha Trang in half a day?
Central Nha Trang fits into one morning. Start at Long Son Pagoda on 23 Tháng 10 street: behind it, steps lead up the hill to the White Buddha, with a view over the city. Nha Trang Cathedral (Nhà thờ Núi) sits on the next hill at 01 Thái Nguyên — entry is free, it is open roughly 5:30–17:00, and Sunday mornings are for Mass. From there it is 5 minutes to Dam Market, the round building with dried fruit, coffee and dried seafood, open 5:00–18:30. Finish with the Po Nagar towers on the hill by Xóm Bóng bridge and the Hon Chong rocks a couple of kilometres further north, by the sea.
Why visit the Po Nagar towers?
Po Nagar is a Cham temple on a hill by Xóm Bóng bridge, at 61 2 Tháng 4 street, 7–8 minutes’ drive from the centre. From the VinBus 23 stop «Đối diện nhà hàng Yến Sào» it is about 800 m on foot. Don’t aim for opening time: some guides say the towers open at 6:00, others at 8:00. Cover shoulders and knees — Po Nagar is a working temple. More on the how to get to Po Nagar page.
What is Hon Chong?
Hon Chong is a pile of huge boulders right at the water’s edge in the north of Nha Trang, about 4 km from the centre along the coast road Trần Phú — Phạm Văn Đồng. It is open from morning to evening, roughly 6–7 am to 6–7 pm. Hon Chong is busiest late in the afternoon, around 16:00–17:00; for photos without a crowd, go in the morning. Hon Chong pairs well with Po Nagar — they are a few minutes apart by Grab.
Where can I go for a full day from Nha Trang?
Boats to Monkey Island and Orchid Island leave from Long Phú pier at Đá Chồng, about half an hour’s drive north. The ride to Monkey Island takes about 15 minutes, to Orchid Island about 30; both are open 7:30–16:30 — ask at the pier about the last boat back. To the south, from Cầu Đá port, speedboats go to Hon Tam Island (6–10 minutes) and to Hon Tre, home of VinWonders. In the hills: Yang Bay park (about an hour west) and the Ba Ho waterfalls (40 minutes north). For beaches away from the city bustle: Bai Dai on the airport road and Doc Let, 50 km north.
What can kids do in Nha Trang?
The Oceanography Museum (1 Cầu Đá, by the Vinpearl port) is open daily 6:00–18:00: tanks with turtles, sharks, rays and corals, and an 18-metre humpback whale skeleton — allow 1–2 hours. Hours can change on public holidays and Tet, so call ahead. VinWonders on Hon Tre Island is an amusement park and water park for a whole day; the crossing leaves from the Vinpearl pier at Cầu Đá. Kids enjoy Monkey Island too, but keep food, bags and phones close and leave jewellery at the hotel: the monkeys snatch them.
Where should I go in the evening?
In the evening, Nha Trang walks along the Trần Phú seafront. The night market on Trần Phú runs daily 19:00–22:00: souvenirs, clothes, street food. Rooftop bars over the bay and bars on the sand are in our guide to bars and clubs in Nha Trang.
What is there to do in the rainy season?
Nha Trang’s rainy season runs from September to December. On wet days, skip the hills and the open coast: Bai Dai gets big waves, the streams at Ba Ho rise without warning, and Yang Bay closes some areas in heavy rain. Long Son Pagoda, the cathedral, Dam Market, the Oceanography Museum and the mud baths carry on as usual in the rain. Month-by-month weather is on the weather page.
On my own or with a tour?
Central Nha Trang and Po Nagar are easy on your own: Grab or Xanh SM get you there in 5–10 minutes — see taxis in Nha Trang. The VinBus 23 electric bus runs along the seafront to the Vinpearl port — route in buses in Nha Trang. A motorbike works well for Bai Dai and Yang Bay on paved roads, but the last stretch to Ba Ho is rough, so without experience take a car (motorbike rental). The islands, Ba Ho and Yang Bay are often done as a tour with hotel pick-up — how to choose an agency is in tours in Nha Trang.
