Nha Trang beaches: where to swim, when the sea is calm and what to check

Nha Trang beaches: the city beach along Tran Phu, Bai Dai on the airport road, Doc Let 50 km north and the islands. When the sea is calm, rip currents and swimming bans, and how not to lose your phone.

Nha Trang’s main beach is the city beach along the Trần Phú seafront: it is free, and you can walk to it from any hotel by the sea. The long beaches out of town are Bai Dai, on the road to Cam Ranh airport, and Doc Let, 50 km north. The sea is calmest from February to August; from October to December the city gets big waves and swimming is sometimes banned.

When is the sea calm in Nha Trang?

From February to August. From October to December Nha Trang has the monsoon: wind, high waves, and boat trips and dives are cancelled. In October 2025, during a storm, the bay’s rescue team banned swimming along the Trần Phú — Phạm Văn Đồng seafront, where waves are big and currents strong. If the sea is the point of your trip, look at February to August; for the rainy season see Nha Trang in November and Nha Trang in December.

Where should I swim on the city beach?

Swim where there are plenty of people and lifeguards in sight, and do what they say — flags, “no swimming” signs, whistles. Don’t go in at empty spots. From 17 to 22 February 2026 lifeguards pulled 20 people out of the water at Trần Phú and Phạm Văn Đồng beaches, and five went to hospital. If a current pulls you away from the shore, don’t swim against it: swim parallel to the beach until it lets go, then head in. If you can’t, float on your back and wave.

How do I keep my phone safe on the beach?

Don’t leave your phone or bag on the sand, a bench or a motorbike seat while you swim — have someone stay with your things. In 2026 Nha Trang police caught thieves on the city beach near 2 Tháng 4 Square and Thanh Niên Park: they pose as beachgoers and take tourists’ unattended belongings. Leave valuables and large amounts of cash at home.

What is Bai Dai like?

Bai Dai is a long beach south of Nha Trang on Nguyễn Tất Thành avenue, on the way to Cam Ranh airport, about half an hour by taxi. The main beach is shallow and has lifeguards. On the wild stretches to the side there are “dangerous swimming” signs — people have drowned there, so stay out of the water. Bai Dai gets big waves from September to December. It is also where people learn to surf — schools run September to May (surfing in Nha Trang). Taxi, motorbike and the 16-2 bus are on the how to get to Bai Dai page.

Is Doc Let worth the trip?

Doc Let is a beach in Đông Ninh Hòa, about 50 km north — just over an hour by car, about 1 h 40 min on bus No. 3. Part of the shore belongs to resorts with paid entry; ask locally where entry is free. The last bus back leaves around 18:00 — check with the driver. More on how to get to Doc Let.
